423 W. Elkhorn Ave. - Estes Park, CO

The Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park opened its 24th Annual Women's History Month Art Exhibition "Random Works of Beauty" on Sunday February 27 with an Artists' Reception and Awards Ceremony at the CAC Fine Art Gallery located at 423 W. Elkhorn Ave. in west downtown Estes Park. This long-standing show spotlights the diversity and style of American Women Artists and is presented each year to coincide with the National Women's History Month celebration in March.

The 2011 Women's History Month national theme celebrates "Our History is Our Strength". We celebrate the national theme in Estes Park by showcasing women in the arts and the contributions they make keeping the national art scene vibrant and alive. We invite you to see this collection of visual art created by American women, some of which is inspired by the beauty of nature that surrounds us, and other works which capture the beauty from within. For twenty four years the exhibition has presented fine visual art in 2 and 3-dimensional form, and the current exhibition is no exception.

From quiet mountain scenes, classical still life and pensive portraiture.... to bold contemporary design and color, the 24th annual exhibition celebrates artist's and vision, passion and work they love to create. This is not a juried show, instead the CAC Fine Art Gallery invites women to pick a work of art that best represents them. "Random Works of Beauty" explores art mediums and techniques that are centuries old, juxtaposed with objects using 21st technology and mediums. The exhibition premieres emerging artists and many renowned artists on the national art scene. Mediums include oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, bronze, mixed media, pencil, printmaking, ceramics, fiber, glass and precious metals. The 2011 show features the work of 61 women.

The public attended an Artist Reception on February 27 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. Artists were be on hand, and musical entertainment was provided by Rebecca Hazlitt on the Celtic harp. Refreshments and savories were donated by The Wapiti Pub, Orlando's Steak House, Aisle 2 Bakery, Sweet Basilico and Heather Stone of Estes Park, Colorado.

National Women's History Project

2011 Theme:
Our History is Our Strength

Our shared history unites families, communities, and nations. Although women’s history is intertwined with the history shared with men, several factors - social, religious, economic, and biological - have worked to create a unique sphere of women's history.

The stories of women’s achievements are integral to the fabric our history. Learning about women’s tenacity, courage, and creativity throughout the centuries is a tremendous source of strength. Until relatively recently, this sphere of women's history was overlooked and undervalued. Women’s achievements were often distorted, disdained, and denied. But, knowing women’s stories provides essential role models for everyone. And role models are genuinely needed to face the extraordinary changes and unrelenting challenges of the 21st century. While women’s history is a relatively new field of study, one important scholar is Gerda Lerner. She is credited with teaching the first women’s history course, establishing the first graduate program in women’s history, and publishing numerous books and treatises on women’s history. In recognition of Gerda Lerner’s pioneering role in establishing the field of women’s history as well as her generous role in mentoring women’s history scholars, the National Women’s History Project is honoring Gerda Lerner by offering her latest book Living with History/Making Social Change.

Gerda Lerner supported our work even before we were the National Women’s History Project. We will always be indebted to her not only for her tenacious, unrelenting, and pioneering work in the field of women’s history, but also for her well-documented research which demonstrates that Our History is Our Strength.
